Which License Do I Need?

"I'm making a pixel RPG and want unique monsters"

Solo indie dev, first game, budget <$1K

You want 200-500 creatures with stats, weaknesses, and lore. You'll rename some, keep others. Your game will sell on Steam for $10-15.

Recommendation: Creator Pack ($149) + Indie License included. Gets you 500 entities, full magic system, commercial rights for 1 game.

"Our studio is building an MMO with this mythology as the base"

Studio of 20 people, $500K budget

You need the full database, exclusive rights so no competing MMO uses the same lore, custom creatures for your endgame, and ongoing consultation.

Recommendation: Ultimate Pack ($1,999) + Genre Exclusive for MMORPG ($4,999/yr). Total: $6,998 first year. Full DB + nobody else can make an MMO with this lore for 3 years.

"I want to publish a D&D 5e bestiary using these creatures"

TTRPG publisher, DriveThruRPG store

You want 100-200 creatures adapted for 5e with CR ratings, stat blocks, and lore. You'll sell the PDF for $15-25.

Recommendation: TTRPG License — either $499 flat or 12% royalty (if you expect <$4K revenue, flat is cheaper. Above $4K, royalty is cheaper).

"I'm a concept artist and want to use creature descriptions as briefs"

Freelance artist, builds portfolio

You want detailed creature descriptions (32 fields each) as reference for concept art. You'll sell prints on Redbubble.

Recommendation: Indie License ($299) + pick 50-100 creatures. Your art is yours — the license covers using our descriptions as reference.

"We're exploring this IP for an animated series"

Animation studio, early development

You want to develop a pitch, hire writers, create concept art. You're not sure if it'll get greenlit.

Recommendation: Film/TV Option ($5,000-$10,000) for 12 months. If it gets greenlit, exercise fee ($25K-$100K) activates. If not, you only paid the option. Zero risk for the studio.

"I want ONE specific creature for my game's final boss"

Indie dev, already has a game, needs 1 thing

You don't need 500 creatures. You want The Weaver of Bones as your boss, with full lore, powers, and weaknesses.

Recommendation: A la carte — 1 Legendary creature ($5) + Indie License ($299) = $304 total. Or negotiate a single-entity mini-license for $50 if you only need this one thing.

Licensing FAQ

Can I modify creature names and descriptions?
Yes, all commercial licenses allow adaptation. You can rename, redesign, change stats, adjust lore. You cannot claim you invented the original mythology.
What happens if my game makes more than $100K?
The Indie license has a $100K/yr revenue cap. If you exceed it, you need to upgrade to Studio ($1,499) or Exclusive ($4,999). We'll never retroactively charge you — just upgrade before your next billing cycle.
Can two games in the same genre both license the Codex?
Yes, unless one of them has a Genre Exclusive license. Non-exclusive licenses allow unlimited licensees. Only the Exclusive license blocks competitors in a specific genre.
Do I own the creatures I license?
No. You own a license to USE them. The IP remains with the creator. Think of it like licensing a song for a movie — you don't own the song, you own the right to use it in your movie.
Can I get a refund?
Digital data packs (JSON, PDF): 14-day refund if unused. License fees: non-refundable once entities have been used in development. Film/TV option fees: non-refundable (standard industry practice).
